Rev. Douglas MacLeod
Lead Pastor

Doug has been very thankful to be a part of making Christ known in the pastoral ministry of Second Church since 2016.  He enjoys congregational worship and preaching, seeing God at work around him, and frequently taking his bike for a ride.

Doug was born in New Jersey and was raised in New York. He graduated from Calvin College and gained his training for ministry from Calvin Theological Seminary. He has been in full-time pastoral ministry for 35 years — having previously served three other congregations in Michigan and Iowa. He and his wife Cathy raised three children and now enjoy their four grandchildren.

Zachary Van Wyk
Director of Student and High School Ministries

Zach has been on staff with Second since July of 2016 as the Director of Student and High School ministry, as well as a Church Partner with Fremont Young Life. Zach graduated from Calvin College in 2016 with a degree in History and Ancient Greek and is married to Lizzie.

He can often be found attending student events, drinking coffee with young adults at local coffee shops, meeting with students in the church youth room or Young Life club room, or in the church office giving Val a hard time. Zach believes that Student Ministry is done best in community and is thankful that Second Church allows him to work in the tension of congregational and community based ministries.

 Valerie Volz
Administrative Assistant/Custodian

Valerie has been the administrative assistant and custodian 15 years and counting. She is a lifelong resident of Fremont and member of Second Church.  She enjoys playing with her grandkids, baking, gardening, reading, knitting and crocheting.

Wendy Kops
Music Director

Wendy joined our staff as our Music Director in September of 2019. Her music journey began by starting piano lessons when she was five years old. She has an Associate’s Degree in the Arts and Sciences, with an emphasis on Music Theory, Literature, and Piano Performance. She has felt God’s call on her life to serve the Lord with her musical gifts all her life.

Wendy lives in Twin Lake, Michigan with her husband Roger. They have raised four children and now enjoy six grandchildren. She also rides horses and takes her motorcycle for an occasional spin.

 Mary V. Folkema
Children’s Ministry Coordinator

Mary joined the Second Church staff in 2018 and enjoys her role in coordinating the nursery and leading the children’s choir and youth worship team. She delights in sharing God’s love with students and seeing them use their gifts to praise and worship the Lord. Mary graduated from Calvin College and taught elementary and middle school students for 19 years before moving to Fremont and joining Second Church.

She and her husband Mike are the parents of eight children, and spending time with family, playing games, camping, and reading are some of her favorite activities.

Ann Pell
Kids Hope Director

Ann has been involved with Kids Hope since its inception at Second Church. She loves being around children and has witnessed more than once the positive change that can come from a caring adult spending one hour a week with a child. Ann was born and raised in Bozeman, Montana.

Ann graduated from Calvin College and enjoyed teaching high school English in her “youth.” She and husband Randy raised three children who have blessed them with 7 grandchildren.
